Go back about 30 years and more than a few in the world of basketball might not have predicted Lloyd Daniels to still be in here in 2022.

Here, as in alive, let alone sitting courtside in a small-college arena in West Texas, watching a game, smiling and mingling with other spectators.

In the mid-1980s, Lloyd Daniels was regarded as one of the next big stars in basketball — arguably, the next big star, a 6-foot-7 guard who even drew comparisons to Magic Johnson. But every astonishing thing he did on the court seemed to be matched by a bad decision off it, to the extent that he was arrested for buying crack cocaine in 1987 and shot three times in 1989.

Somehow, he survived to play 20 years of professional basketball, including stints with five NBA teams.
